Electricity
TANESCO is the principal supplier of electricity in the region. For the year 2003 some 15,510 households were covered with electricity supplies. This worked out at 6.5 percent of all the households. Such coverage did not include hydro generation and solar electricity provided by the private sector for private use.
Of the 74,400 households in urban areas in Ruvuma by 2003, about 16,500 households were served with TANESCO produced electricity. Thus urban households were covered to the extent of 22 percent. On the other hand none of the region's villages were electrified. Not a single rural household had grid electricity. Rural coverage of households was 0% percent. Of the projected 237,100 households in the region by 2003, some 220, 600 households had no electricity.
