Fisheries:
Fishing in Ruvuma region takes place mainly on Lake Nyasa in Mbinga district. The region has no large water bodies apart from Lake Nyasa on which sizeable fishing activities are carried out and contribute significantly to Mbinga's economy. However, there are some minor fishing activities in the river waters and dams of the region. Apart from Lake Nyasa 's 3,157 sq.kms of water there is another 425 sq. kms of water area pockets scattered throughout the region.
Animal protein sources is scarce in the region and it is not regularly supplied and consumed except for fish, available in some parts of Mbinga district. Fish production in the rest of the region does not meet demand and for this reason the region is compelled to import from other regions like Mwanza, Kigoma, Rukwa and Dar es Salaam .
Investment in this field is of great importance, there is no modern fishing practices and so limiting the availability of fish and fish products in the region.
