Forestry:
Ruvuma region's forest cover is estimated to be some 35,300 sq. kms or nearly 55 percent of the region's land area of 63,790 sq. kms. These forests are classified into three categories: Forest reserves, unreserved woodland on public land and forest plantations.
Out of the above mentioned land area, the natural forest reserve is 7,535.6 sq.kms and forest plantation area is 56.7 sq.kms.
Beekeeping
Beekeeping in Ruvuma region is taken up as a part-time economic activity. Its economic contribution to the region is small compared to other income generating activities. It is ignored when other economic activities, such as food or cash crop production are taking place.Beekeeping is mainly undertaken in Tunduru and Songea districts. According to available estimated data for the period from 1999 to 2003 Tunduru and Songea districts accounted for about 44 and 39 percent of the region's beehives. It is estimated that there were about 57,960 traditional and 436 modern beehives in the region in 2003. Thus, 99 percent of beehives are of traditional design. An investor is needed to establish a honey and beewax processing plant .

.Songea Rural district (including Namtumbo) has the largest area under forest reserves followed by Tunduru and Mbinga districts.
